Genus information

Anactinothrips Bagnall, 1909: 329. Type species Anactinothrips meinerti Bagnall, 1909.

Ophidothrips Schmutz, 1909: 273. Type species Ophidothrips handlirschii Schmutz, by monotypy. Synonymised by Moulton, 1933.

Lophothrips Karny, 1911: 503. Type species Lophothrips antennatus Karny, by monotypy. Synonymised by Moulton, 1933.

The 15 species listed below are here interpreted as representing a single genus. In contrast, Retana-Salazar (2009) proposed restricting the genus to two species (antennatus; meinerti), and proposed the following four genera for the species indicated:

Chimairathrips Retana-Salazar, 2009: 82. Type species Anactinothrips gustaviae Mound & Palmer, by monotypy.

Amazoniella Retana-Salazar, 2009: 88. Type species Anactinothrips gibbifer zur Strassen, by monotypy.

Incanothrips Retana-Salazar, 2009: 81. Type species Anactinothrips graphidura Hood; also davidi Soto & Retana.

Amerindiothrips Retana-Salazar, 2009: 89. Type species Amerindiothrips gonzalezi Retana-Salazar, 2009: 90; also brachyura Hood, cristatus Hood, distinguendus Bagnall, fuscus Moulton, longisetis Bagnall, marginipennis Hood, nigricornis Hood, and silvicola Hood.

Biology and Distribution

The identity of some of the 15 species in this Neotropical genus needs confirmation based on suitable series to investigate structural variation. Of the described species, one is known only from an inadequate description (handlirschii), four from single specimens (cristatus, distinguendus, fuscus, longisetis), three each from two specimens (antennatus, graphidura, meinerti), one from three (nigricornis), two from five (gonzalezi, marginipennis), and one from seven (brachyura).
